#7 3/10/2009 Cursing Is F****** Bad

“The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it”
-George Washington

Even the founder of this great nation agrees with me: the use of profanity in daily life is something that should be forbidden. I'm not saying that it should be punished, because that wouldn't work in today's society, but I surely wish it would be. The definition of swearing is to use violent, abusive, or blasphemous language against someone or something. I believe this definition is frighteningly limited. Profanity is now used to "bolster" everyday language and doesn't even have to be accompanied by a threat or a hateful message! People are adding in dirty words to make phrases/sentences longer, to make words roll off their tongue better, or to add emphasis to ideas.

This is insane! If only people read more literature, they would realize that there are an infinite amount of words that would be better than the profane words being used. They would sound so much more intelligent and people would listen to them. Who would you rather listen to? Someone who has a problem with you and approaches you like this; "What the f*** do you think you're f***** doing you r******* piece of s**** you sound like an a****** without even saying anything, just s*** the f**** up before you hurt somebody, f*****," or like this; "Excuse me you imbecile, how do you expect anyone to take you seriously when your entire person gives off the aura of ineptitude? Your ancestors must number in the millions; it's hard to believe that so many people are at fault for your presence. Please think before you say anything, because you should never enter a battle of wits unarmed."

As I have hopefully demonstrated, I was able to say what the first quote was trying to accomplish--and then some--without the use of one swear word.

Another one of my pet peeves is people who use the Lord's name in vain. The words, "God d*** it" are the three most volitile words in the whole of the English language. If people were to think about what they were saying, I doubt that they would use those words. They are asking our Heavenly Father to place a certain part of his creation in utter disconnect from His presence ever again. They aren't taking into account that that person/thing will never experience the feeling of our Lord ever again! Not even thinking about how it might make God feel to have one of the people He created in His own image wish Hell upon something else He created! For more on swearing, especially in the Lord's name, click HERE and scroll to page 82, starting at the second paragraph and going down the rest of the page.

This is ridiculous. Please do not add to the hurt and pain and confusion of this already-chaotic world by cursing. Take a stand for what is obviously right and insult someone with some real strong words, not the hollow, empty words that have become commonplace in our society.

Yes, swearing is bad.

I agree that cursing is bad; just looking at the expression on that face tells me how bad it is!

Wow, statements without cursing might actually be more powerful than I thought. If someone came at me with the statement you came up with that had no cursing in it, i would either be too shocked to reply, or rolling on the ground laughing hysterically. I agree with you, people would have to read a lot more to be able to come up with a statement such as the one you did.

I agree Carraway, cursing is very offensive, insulting, rude, disrespectful, etc. I will also admit that I curse sometimes. And although you must be very annoyed by the people who say these insulting things, you must admit that you also do the same time to time. We all do the same, but the real issue you have clearly explained is how we can stop and prevent ourselves and others from saying these derogatory terms and "keeping our cool." Great Blog!

This reminded me of a video blog I saw where the blogger talked about Shakespearean insults; they are the most hilarious insults I've ever heard in my life, simply because they're so creative. And, as storkafork pointed out, if someone came up to me and angrily called me a "gleeking beetle-headed whey-face," I'd probably be more amused than offended. It's all the venting with no hard feelings! :)

Yes, I'd like to clear some things up. I am human, I do slip up on occasion and curse, but even then am I wary on the choice of word. I am quite pleased that so many people agree with me about the horrors of swearing!
